58. My Dad enlisted in the Navy in 1940
Thu Dec 8, 2016, 06:16 AM
Dec 2016

He went to the USS Yorktown. Just missed being killed when the ship was bombed during the Battle of the Coral Sea. He was on her at Midway, abandoned ship when she was damaged and then went back on board to try and save her. He was onboard when she was torpedoed then sank. He and about half of the Yorktown engineers were then assigned to the USS West Virginia. She had just been raised off the bottom in Pearl Harbor and moved to dry dock at the Navy. First assignment on WV was to clean 5 feet of mud out of one of her engine rooms. Said they found two bodies and parts of a third body of men killed when she sank on Dec 7. Spent the rest of the war on WV. Both my Moms parents and my mom worked in the Kaiser shipyard in Vancouver WA throughout the war.
