Could be that Russia just wants to annex Ukraine. That would be bad enough, but I think it's worse. Don't forget that for the last decade, Putin formed and was the principal spokesperson for the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) countries, whose stated ambition and purpose was to end the US Dollar's reign as the world reserve currency. It's pretty simple really; if countries adopt another currency as the reserve currency, there will be no need for foreigners to hold the US Dollars they currently hold. The US Dollar is somewhat unique, in that more than 90% of the dollars in circulation are held outside of the US. When all those dollars come home, inflation reaches hyper levels in the US. I think Putin wants to see this, as he has a long memory, and wants the US to suffer the same degree of humiliation that he personally suffered when the USSR collapsed.
