(Long-time lurker, first-time poster.)
Assembly and the components aren't a major factor in the price.
But a major factor that isn't in these calculations is that the US simply doesn't have the manufacturing capacity to deal with mass-market electronics like (for instance) China, Taiwan, South Korea, et al. iPhones and Androids: designed in the US, manufactured in Asia. Intel chips: designed in the US, manufactured in Asia. Apple chips: designed in the US, manufactured in Asia.
This isn't xenophobia, this is a simple fact. American companies can't move the fabrication of computers/smartphones/etc. to the US unless the manufacturing infrastructure already exists. And it simply doesn't.
