63. Making nice to my ex and my ex's brother

My ex was born in South Africa but is a US citizen now. I lived in South Africa for several years in the 90s. His brother still lives there and is extremely well-off. We've always been on good terms, but I'm making a conscious effort to make more friendly overtures.

Ex BIL has bought up quite a bit of property in Cape Town. Ex has indicated he'll be retiring there soon, taking up one of BIL's properties for a rental. It's reasonably inexpensive to live there. I've mentioned to BIL that if he finds a suitable property (he knows my needs), I'll crack open the 401(k) and pay him cash for it.

I still have my old residence permit, and enough in-law and step family to help me find my feet if I go that way.

That, and listening to nice storytime podcasts and audio books in place of news during the commute.
