(15,383 posts)We could go back as far as the spring of 1918, when Samuel Bush became chief of the Ordnance, Small Arms and Ammunition Section of the War Industries Board of Bernard Baruch and Clarence Dillon, with national responsibility for government assistance to and relations with Remington and other weapons companies. Bush was essentially taking national responsibility for government assistance to his own Remington Arms Company and other weapon makers. Through these weapons manufacturers, Samuel Bush made and sold arms to 75% of the WWI combatants on both sides.
Or, if you prefer, we can advance one World War to Prescott Bush, who was a founding member and one of seven directors (including W. Averell Harriman) of the Union Banking Corporation (holding a single share out of 4,000 as a director), an investment bank that operated as a clearing house for many assets and enterprises held by German steel magnate Fritz Thyssen. In July 1942, the bank was suspected of holding gold on behalf of Nazi leaders. A subsequent government investigation disproved those allegations but confirmed the Thyssens' control, and in October 1942 the United States seized the bank under the Trading with the Enemy Act and held the assets for the duration of World War II. Journalist Duncan Campbell pointed out documents showing that Prescott Bush was a director and shareholder of a number of companies involved with Thyssen (Wikipedia).
Even later, on November 22, 1963, after Ike had publicly warned us of the dangers of the Military Industrial Complex, John F. Kennedy was killed. Some, myself included, believe this was a coup-d'etat by the MIC because in Bobby's words, "John actually believed he was president."
Later still, we can watch the American people become brainwashed from the seed planted in 1971 by the Powell memo, and again in 1984 when Reagan allowed the Fairness Doctrine to die. Then we can watch in horror at the ascension of Fox 'news,' the court ruling that they could lie and still call it 'truth,' and 'balanced reporting.' We can watch in mindless horror at the screamfest that is right wing hate-talk radio, and how it overtook the airwaves in the 1990s.
Then, as you say, the Republican coup that stole power from the Democrats in 2000, and then even more dubious results in 2004.
Now, we see that half of Americans believe Obama is not a citizen, and that unemployment has gone up under him. If you google 'treason,' Obama comes out as the second image - a wanted poster.
So, unfortunately, we have exactly the type of government now that a stupid, gullible, complacent people deserve.
