19. Kurt von Schleicher

Dec 2016

He was Chancellor for just over a month and proved to be rather incompetent. He was however a key factor in the intrigues that shifted power from the German Parliament to the Presidency, creating an autocracy. That is something the Nazis took full advantage of once they were put in power.

Von Schleicher supported Hitler for Chancellor because he hated Hitler's main competitor Franz von Papen. Von Schleicher believed he would be appointed Minister of Defense in return for his support. Unfortunately for Herr Schleicher he had been dealing with Ernst Röhm, the head of the SA, behind Hitler's back. He hoped to take advantage of power struggles within the Nazi party but his actions were not as secret as he thought and he was assassinated during the Night of the Long Knives.
