3. The whole NRA-mentality is built on this "arms-race"/"Cold War" concept.

They think, they only way to ensure peace is to give everybody the means to kill everybody else. And that way, nobody will dare to kill anybody else.

Except that people also accidently kill each other with guns.

And except for the half dozen or so instances during the Cold War when stupid accidents in handling nuclear weapons almost triggered a world-wide nuclear war.
