7. I think a lot of us are scared to death.

I haven't had a night's sleep without nightmares since the election. Most of them are not overtly about it, but they are all anxiety dreams that I know are the result of the election. It doesn't help that so many people on this board still seem to want to cast blame for the Democrats' loss rather than think what can we do now? This is an all-hands-on-deck situation, and I simply do not know what to do.

A colleague of mine who was politically active in the 60s against the Vietnam war said that if all else fails, we can take it to the streets. I don't like the idea of recreating the kind of mass protest movements with the accompanying chaos that happened in the 60s, but since we can no longer count on any of our institutions of government, I don't see what else we can do. The problem is that this is not just one issue, like Vietnam, it is going to be everything: civil rights and liberties, the environment, education, foreign policy, Social Security, Medicare, tax policy, ad infinitum, ad infinitum.

I really hope that young people will step up to the plate. I know it is not fair to put it on them because they haven't created the crisis, but they have the strength and energy to drive this effort. I am not young or in good health, and I am very, very tired. But I am willing to do my part.

Happy Holidays to you and everyone else on DU.
