He started out in the business when he was in his teens with the group the Teddy Bears. He wrote the hit "To Know Him Is to Love Him," a phrase that happens to be on his father's gravestone. It was a huge hit and launched Spector's career and brought him fame until mental illness brought him infamy and prison time.
