The Greek tem is "Magi" and was not a term of respect among the Jews as they represented the "Magicians" of the pagan religions who didn't even (in the eyes of the first century Jews) know of YHWH, His promises and His law. The point of the verse is that the power of the anointed one was so powerful that it would eventually extend to the simple but uneducated sheep herders on the one hand and even the sophistry of the elite intellectuals of the pagan intelligentsia who remained unsatisfied with the cosmology of their limited local gods and would be washed with the awe of the Christ once Jesus full Ministry was completed.
