you don't gamble with stakes that high unless you have something damn close to a sure thing, the payoff is phenomenal, or (preferably) both.

no question about the payoff - complete victory for Putin there.

question is, how much of a sure thing was it really? we'd like to think it wasn't, but the Russians were in a position to help with the insurance themselves.
