(80,708 posts)Something like 70% of the customer base- they're just there to get whatever it is, their latte or whatnot- all business, they're in, they're out, they pay, not terribly noteworthy either way.
Maybe 20% are super fucking cool, cool enough that maybe you become friends outside of the establishment, grab drinks after work, that kind of thing.
But that last 10%... ...
That's what will grind you down, after enough time. Kill your spirit. Turn you into someone who hates the human animal, in general.
And I was just an amicable if oft-hungover young dude. That's not even factoring in this other shit. Sure, sometimes women- or men- would hit on me, but it wasn't like the sorts of crap that any attractive young females would have to put up with.
Until the end of my days I will have extra sympathy for anyone having to deal with the public in their day to day- and beyond that, of course it's incumbent upon people to understand that the service "relationship" is just that; not to say that there NEVER develops anything beyond that, but--- just because the young woman who gives you your latte or scans your groceries smiles at you, doesn't mean she *likes* you, dork.
