Mistakes can be and have been made leading to the execution of innocent people. Death penalty cases are also extremely expensive and housing a convict awaiting the death penalty is also quite expensive. I also seriously doubt that the death penalty acts as a deterrent to other murderers
However if ever an individual deserved the death penalty it's Dylan Roof. He's unremorseful and obviously guilty. Of course that may be caused by the fact that he might be totally insane. Should we execute those who suffer from severe mental illness? Another question I find difficult to answer.

No, but I wouldn't even be on the jury since you have to be able to consider it to qualify.
