In reply to the discussion: Sandusky won't last long in jail [View all]alcibiades_mystery
(36,437 posts)By and large, these kinds of convicts go into protective custody and stay there, and very little inmate-caused harm, comes to them.
The idea that child molesters are constantly attacked in prison is just a little fantasy held by people on the outside. They are certainly targets for violence, but over the past 20 years or so, prisons have become very good at reducing violence, especially toward vulnerable populations (like this offender class).
The fantasy (that child molesters are attacked, beaten, and otherwise "paid back" through inmate violence) is now largely mythology, not borne out by any objective metrics. Despite the violent revenge fantasies of the public, most child molesters do their time in relative peace, like other offender classes, and most are released. Clearly, Sandusky will not be released, but the idea that he "won't last long" is just a silly little bit of nonsense. He'll go into a PC unit and live a relatively normal prison life once he is normalized into the routine.
