6. Which oligarchy?

An oligarchy is, first and foremost, a political creature.

For many, the impression is that the wealthy are the power behind the government. Except for those politicians that we approve of--they're okay. Under this view, the wealthy are the oligarchy to be resisted.

For others the oligarchy are those who define what the culture is or should be and the politicians who enable them. Under this view, the "counterculture" intellectuals and the politicians who find their ideas enlightened are the oligarchy to be resisted.

In both cases, there's a political tie-in. But ultimately, the "true oligarchy" is either economic or intellectual, not political.

It's not like it's the monied interests that are primarily behind things like opposition to LGBT rights.

A lot of people are all about empathy, which is a good way to understand another's behavior. But often they're utterly deaf when it comes to actual understanding, and can only see their own way. A lot of such folk are on the right; a lot aren't.
