I could embrace my mother easily, but not my father.

He wasn't that way with his kids, and he spent much of his life at his job (taking more photographs of the automated machinery that he helped design than his children), so I struggled to embrace him even when he was old and in poor health. It just seemed weird. I mostly patted him on the shoulder even when I felt terrible for him.

According to Tony Schwartz, Trump wasn't close to his kids:
