I still found it surprising. I had expected to hear some comments. On the other hand, one doesn't want to insult the barber too much. He or she has tools that can make you look horrid for a very long time. The barber, on the other hand, has pretty much a free hand at delivering mild insults to the guy in the chair.

Thus has it always been at the barbershop.
