This is an extraordinary backlash.

The media has no recent referent by which to gauge this. Reporters are in unknown waters, at a loss; reports are off the cuff; let's give the media a few more hours to comprehend what the hell is happening.

The work of democracy can be messy and unsettling. Patience has limits, but a brief period of circumspect is warranted. No need to set fires in the street...yet.
