These statements were made in response to this FB post shared from "Real Truth Now."
"I cannot, in honesty or good conscience, blame anyone but myself for my status in life. I can also not expect anyone but ME to do anything about it..... I don't want or need a handout, nor do I desire to punish those who are doing better than I."
My comments:
I commend this man for taking personal responsibility for his life and status. I think we would certainly be better off if more people did so. I respectfully disagree with his statement about handouts. He gets a handout every time he gets in his car and drives on the roads all of us pay for. He gets a handout every time he puts food in his mouth because we subsidize our food production. He gets a handout every time he goes to any store that has goods brought in by trucks that travel across our highways. He gets a handout each time we invest in the education of a child. Through education, that child has the opportunity to make something of him/herself, contribute to society, and take the personal responsibility for him/herself this man so highly values.
It's not about punishing anyone doing better than 99% of us. If those of us with modest incomes pay a 30% tax rate, then those who have been fortunate enough to have an abundance of income should pay the same. After all, they enjoy the same "handouts" the rest of us do. It's not about punishment. It's about each of us taking personal responsibility not just for the betterment of ourselves, but for the betterment of our country. Thats called patriotism. Its about each and every one of us being patriotic enough to step up and pay our fair share. It's about all of us being patriotic enough to invest in the future of our country by investing in our children. Its about all of us being patriotic enough to pay it forward to the next generation.
