(348 posts)I live in Tennessee, and grew up in a fundamentalist home and environment. I personally know the type of people who truly believe in Trump and the entire alt-right/fascist/totalitarian/theocratic movement that his ascendant power represents in this country. They deny climate change science not because they have ever read any evidence, but because it's not described in the bible. They support nationalism because they believe the bible describes the appropriateness of tribal and hierarchical societies. I have been told both of things things (and many more dismaying and discouraging justifcations) repeatedly in conversation with members of my own family and their friends...and they are not alone...they are legion, my friend. These people will not be dissuaded. Their entire perception of reality is tied up in it. In a diplomatic world, there is no reason why secularists and zealots can't all have their own parcel. But our world's diplomacy is an illusion meant to set the world on fire. We are being directed to militarize against each other out of the perception that we're already attacking each other. And it is manifold across social, political, national, international, and religious lines.
