(10,252 posts)"Christianity" was defined and invented by Constantine the Great in 325 AD at the 1st Council of Nicea. He shaped Christianity to rule his empire. It was this council that determined the nature of Jesus to be the Trinity, when Easter occurred, the valid and invalid scriptures for the Gospel, and the laws of the Church. Most of the Church laws were inherited from Roman religious law. All people (mostly the Gnostics), who did not subscribe to the Council of Nicea were deemed heretics and exiled. Later, heretics were tortured and murdered. "Official" established Christianity has a sordid and brutal history. But it is NOT the teachings of Jesus, assuming that Jesus was a real historical figure and not a composite of many teachings from that time, as some scholars believe.
Personally, I think that Jesus was a real historic al figure, who was influenced by Buddhist Mahayana teachings that were prevalent in east Asia, Greece, Rome, and Syria and the Levant at time. The main teaching of which is about compassion.
