There's more money to be made pushing the lie anyway.

If people got hold of the fact that they got fucked, we might end up like Tunisia or Egypt, and no business would get done because everybody is too busy fighting. Businesses would lose money, people would be all over the streets, and there would be constant struggles between brutal police officers and protesters. Things would be a mess, and our economy would grind to a halt until the whole thing is sorted out.

People might even go ahead and push for complete overhaul if they get that angry, and that scares diehard partisans in both parties. Nobody there wants people to be given the opportunity to choose a system of government where more than two parties rule. In Egypt, they simply wanted Mubarak gone, but that didn't happen, and they got so angry that now they won't accept anything but a completely new constitution and a new parliament.

They don't want that. Nobody who is invested in the current status quo does.
