(45,319 posts)17. You need home insurance to carry a mortgage, not to buy a home. Not the same thing.
I know folks like to say 'homeowner' when they just hold a mortgage, but the fact is one can simply purchase a home, without a mortgage and thus own the place. A mortgaged property belongs to the bank, which requires you to protect that which you do not yet own. People with a mortgage do not own their homes, they are buying them slowly and the actual owners require the insurance.
