(127,488 posts)to playing key signatures with flats rather than sharps. I've sightread some pretty difficult pieces in my time that involved changed from 13/8, 11/8 and 7/8 throughout the piece and other pieces with four flats, but I really had to work to learn the pieces within the four days that we went from rehearsal to actually putting on the production.
It's difficult enough to read sheet music in the low lighting of an orchestra pit, but reading the music, remembering the key and watching for the occasional accidentals was cruel and unusual punishment. I didn't really get to enjoy the play either.
To top it off, I volunteered to participate since with the exception of the one music major on scholarship who was a first-year student who played the first trumpet part, the rest of the other trumpet players had conflicts in their schedules. I wasn't on a music scholarship and managed to fit it into my schedule while taking organic chemistry, physics, abstract algebra and calculus III at the same time. Crazy me.
