(16,442 posts)from high school, but she started college at age 40 and was proud to become a public school teacher. I saw how she put her heart and soul into her profession. The weekend before she started her first year of teaching, I went with her to the local supply store and helped her pick out all the materials she needed to get started, on her own time and her own dime, before she earned her first paycheck. She continued to do this all throughout her career, and I know of many, many instances in which she purchased clothing, or shoes, or food to send home over the weekend for needy students (we lived in a county in WV with a high poverty rate). Nobody had to tell her where to find the pencils, but then my mother, like every other public school teacher I have ever met, worked hard to get where she was. She didn't buy or bribe her way into a position for which she was ludicrously unqualified. None of my 4 grandparents had the opportunity to be educated beyond the 8th grade, and I cannot imagine my life if my own options had been limited by inaccessibility of public schools, or if funds that were located for public education had been gutted by a clueless ideologue like Betsy DeVos who is playing at education in much the way Marie Antoinette amused herself by sporting about in a milkmaid outfit at Versailles.
