who do the cable interviews are speaking to only one audience: Trump. They've gone full Baghdad Bob; they dare not speak words not approved by SCROTUS. Baghdad Bob, as you recall, was Saddam Hussein's Information Minister who regularly delivered hilariously wrong "information" during Gulf War I.

His pronouncements included claims that American soldiers were committing suicide "by the hundreds" outside the city, and denial that there were any American tanks in Baghdad, when in fact they were only several hundred meters away from the press conference where he was speaking and the combat sounds of the nearing American troops could already be heard in the background of the broadcast. On another occasion he spoke of the disastrous outcomes of previous foreign attempts to invade Iraq, citing an unspecified western history book and inviting the journalists present to come to his home to read it. His last public appearance as Information Minister was on 8 April 2003, when he said that the Americans "are going to surrender or be burned in their tanks. They will surrender, it is they who will surrender".

Poor "Bob" was in a tough spot. If he had said anything that actually approached the truth about the invasion, Saddam probably would have had him shot; no doubt his audience was Saddam as much as it was the Iraqis. While SCROTUS is not likely to have Miller or Spicer shot if they don't repeat their Trump-approved lies like automatons (at least not yet), he will most certainly fire them. Their lies are approaching Bob-like craziness but they have to tell them. Why anyone would actually want to be SCROTUS' spokesperson is beyond me.
