Then Pence selects a Vice President, I think someone from the senate (McCain or Graham because they've been pursuing the Russia connection) then when Pence resigns, the new Vice President takes over for the remaining year or so of the term. In 2018 the democrats control congress and in 2020 the democrats win back the White House.
That's how I see it unfolding. In fact, Ryan doesn't win reelection in 2018, so he becomes as obscure a political figure as Santorum.

I think Ryan might be marginally more reasonable, but Pence would be easier to beat in 2020.
