She was able to offer her support in 2008 since she ran in 2006. She was also one of the first senators offering her support to the president during his primary season, which is why she was featured at the convention. They had worked together on legislation while he was still a senator, which is how they became acquainted.

I don't know why this is such an issue. Steve Israel, the chair of the DCCC, has requested that those who are up for reelection consider staying away from the convention.
