1. Likely he was a plant but IIRC, you can "check in" from anywhere on FB.

It will autofill based on GPS but you can override it. Even the GPS suggestions give you a few choices. I haven't been there but I suspect that standing out on the Ellipse in DC would be close enough to get WH. Being across the street from a trump property would get it on the list.

All that said - IMHO he was a plant. Car salesman or not, his degree of preparedness to "say a few words" to the entire country, introduced by the president (his hero)...his calmness at being asked to speak was just a little too surprising.

Add to that the Secret Service letting him through with no vetting just because the president said so. I'm not buying it.
