A common problem with criminal conspiracies is that the end game is for only one of the conspirators to end up with everything.
The other problem is that everything that does not further the conspiracy is considered disposable.
Putin is currently the most powerful one in this situation who considers himself in charge of the mechanisms of power and is not the type to share that power.
So anyone who might threaten his assumed status quo must be eliminated.

Including anyone who might be considered a partner/fellow traveler or who might have been considered an invaluable tool just days prior...
