It was a debate in the House of Commons.
The UK has a procedure whereby people can sign an online petition, and if it gets over a certain number of signatures, it will be debated in the Commons. That's what happened. There were actually two petitions, one for and one against a state visit (guess which got more signatures). Both were debated today.
It's gotten more publicity for the prospective visit (not that it was needed), and a number of MPs got to vent and stand their ground, or own up to defending Trump. That's not a bad thing, but it won't affect any visit, as May is hell bent on sucking up to Trump because she doesn't have many options for trading partners beyond the EU once Brexit kicks in.
