other than for really major debates on legislation or Prime Minister's Questions. In fact, if all the MPs turned up the debating chamber in the Commons, there wouldn't be room for all of them.

Folks make quite a bit of mischief by posting TV stills showing empty benches (and there's no doubt that some MPs could take their jobs more seriously), but MP's have duties and responsibilities outside the debating chamber, just like any other politicians.

Since there was nothing really at stake today other than an opportunity to make some strongly held feelings known, it's not much of a surprise if there was a relatively poor turnout.
