So today, I was talking with a fellow teacher who is considering retiring. She has to make a choice to buy insurance at the beginning of her retirement for a year, or wait until the year or so before she hits medicare as she is entitled to some years of insurance as part of her retirement. This was a real dilemma for her as she wasn't sure if she should wait until competition brought down the prices. I asked her what she was talking about and she mentioned competition via buying insurance across state lines. I told her that they only way that brought competition down was when certain states would allow substandard insurance to be sold at a cheap price, but it would only include 2 band-aids and a cotton swab. Real insurance, the kind she would need and depend on, would be more expensive. I likened it to credit cards and how they are issued across state lines from states that have poor consumer protections. I'm sure she still didn't fully understand but she stopped talking.
This is the cold hard truth, and the reason that many of the "Why Did We Lose" posts fail to understand. They really are not educated or informed on the issues and when they get their news, likely from Fox or RW radio, they only hear short messages repeated over and over again with no substance. Here on DU, we are all informed, which is why we have difficulty understanding why anyone would vote against their best interest. These people don't realize they have done that. And sadly, they may never no matter what.
We can improve our message and actually focus on the working man, but in the end, these people will still consume news the way they do now and still won't accept the message that the politicians they vote for don't represent them.
