I had my annual checkups as required by my employer. Blood Pressure in the really healthy range, low cholesterol numbers, and so on. Aside from being a couple of pounds overweight everything was hunky-dory. Right up to the night I passed out in the garage, had an ambulance ride to the hospital and had open heart surgery less than 36 hours after I arrived.

Total cost: ~$125,000. Luckily I a) believed in insurance, b) had access to a great insurance plan from my company, and c) could afford it. Total out of pocket: $350. However, as I said I could afford the insurance. My insurance cost about $6K/yr (including the HSA of $3500 which covered the entire deductibles for the year). How do you afford $125K without insurance or $6K/yr without a damn good job?

Why is the US the only industrialized country in the world that doesn't include basic health care to all?
