(40,988 posts)The ugliest buildings in the world are all the various flavors of "McMansion."
My parents once owned a small farm surrounded by larger lemon orchards.
The lemon orchards were later sold, ripped out, and turned into mini-ranches with big ugly homes that appealed to wealthier people who worried more about property values than they'd enjoy any sort of creativity or good taste. My parents fled as soon after their new neighbors formed a homeowners association and started complaining all activities that resembled farming or creative art. God forbid you use chicken shit as fertilizer, keep a few battered old vehicles visible from the street, paint a mural on a wall, or have a lawn that doesn't look a chemically enhanced golf course.
My parents are both artists who had day jobs. My brother is an artist too and had painted murals on the house. I'm certain everything my parents did threatened these alien property values. My parents sold the place and retired.
Everything that was interesting about the place has been ripped out; the animal pens, the chicken coop, the gardens, trees I planted... The small three bedroom house and murals are gone, replaced by a 4000 square foot monstrosity. It's all ugly now, the entire area gone bland and boring and "affluent" with electric driveway gates and "upscale" Home Depot decor. It's no fucking wonder so many of their wives and children become alcoholics and drug addicts. It's a damned dull and oppressive community. Conformity may sometimes be lucrative but it kills.
