37. Why NASCAR starts the season with its biggest race

Auto racing - ANY form of it - is unique among American sports in that every team in the league is on the same field at the same time. You couldn't put all 30 MLB teams, or all 32 NFL teams, on one field, tell them to play and get anything but catastrophe. There are 40 teams in NASCAR's top series, and at the drop of the green flag every one of 'em is right there playing against each other.

NASCAR opens its season with its most prestigious race because the teams are in the best shape they're going to be in all season at the Daytona 500. No other sport can say that about its biggest game - which, for everyone else, is at the end of the season.
