And in some other states, they have changed the documents you need in order to get a driver's license. IF you have a US passport, that will suffice along with something to prove you reside where you say you do, such as a power bill. Otherwise, you need a certified copy of your birth certificate to prove your citizenship. When I applied for a birth certificate in order to get my passport, it was $15.00 (several years ago, don't know current fee).

I witnessed many people being turned away at the driver's license office when I went in for renewal several years ago. The reason? They lacked the proper documentation and were told to come back when they had them.

The fees for the license and the documents to obtain the license would be an obstacle for many of the working poor in this country. I believe the license fee alone was close to $50.00.

There are more ways to deter potential voters than we can count. Making it difficult to obtain an acceptable government issued photo ID is one common way to thin out those you don't want to vote.
