A lot of them (I won't say all of them) really just don't have much empathy for other people. Notice how they're always against help for people until they or one of their families needs it? They have a very hard time imagining themselves in someone else's shoes. Those kinds of people are going to naturally be drawn to political groups who are more punitive and authoritarian.

My sister, who is a big believer of reincarnation, says they just aren't as evolved yet. They still have many lives to live and many shoes to try on.
