Dana James Boente is the second in the line of succession to be the Attorney General of the United States under a February 9, 2017 Executive Order signed by President Donald Trump; and that reversed an Executive Order signed by President Barack Obama, seven days before he left office, that changed the order of succession, without explanation, to remove Boente from the list.

Boente was the Acting Attorney General of the United States from January 30, 2017 until February 9, 2017 and the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. He became Acting Deputy Attorney General of the United States on February 9, 2017 when Attorney General Jeff Sessions was sworn in.
