whether this was part of a prepared statement, a response to a question, or volunteered information (as in this case), it's all about the lie.

how on earth can any question, long, tortured, circuitous or whatever, turn a flagrantly false answer into anything other than a lie?

unless the "question" was "whatever the truth, just repeat after me..." or "give me an example of a lie", then all that matters is the lie.
