Overplaying The Hand? [View all]

It’s a phrase I’ve heard endless times in the past few days from Republican spokes-mouths (domestic and Russian): “The Democrats are over-playing their hand.”

What the GOP doesn’t seem to understand is that it’s their own party that’s dealing the cards – and as long as they keep tossing out those winning hands, the Dems are going to keep playing.

Mike Flynn caught lying about contacts with the Russians during the campaign and beyond – Straight Flush.

Jeff Sessions meeting with Sergey Kislyak, caught lying under oath about it, then changing his story from one minute to the next – Full House.

Jared Kushner and Mike Flynn exposed as meeting with Kislyak at Trump Tower last December – Three of a Kind.

McConnell exposed as covering up CIA reports that Russian hacks were aimed at electing Trump – Four of a Kind.

And then there’s the seemingly endless Royal Flushes delivered to the Dems by the Dealer-in-Chief himself, apparently too busy Tweeting to notice that when you keep claiming to be holding four aces – and your hand turns out to be a deuce, a joker, two orange Candyland squares, the deed to Baltic Avenue, and an expired coupon for a free McRib sandwich – you’re going to lose every time.

As the Republicans wipe the flop-sweat from their brows and insist that the Democrats are over-playing their hand, they persist in literally giving them all the Kings, Queens and Jacks in the deck, and all of the same suit: spades – in other words, shovels with which the Democrats are gleefully burying their opponents, while laughing about how easy it is to outsmart the rubes who keep throwing their own credibility into the pot.

How sad is it when the dealer’s own team is doing the cheating, yet the other side is being dealt one winning hand after the other? How incompetent a player do you have to be to keep stacking the deck against yourself?

The Dems are merely letting the chips fall where they may – while the Republicans whinge about how the chips keep piling-up on the Dem’s side of the table, and don’t understand how or why that keeps happening.

It was oft said during Obama’s tenure in office that he could play multi-dimensional chess while the GOP weren’t adept enough to win at checkers. What we’re witnessing now is a Republican party that keeps confusing high-stakes poker with a game of Go Fish. And not only are they telling their opponents just where the “fish” can be found – they’re conveniently baiting their hooks for them.

As the late Bill Paxton famously said in Aliens, “Game over, man – game over!”

And yet the Republicans keep at it, still deluded into believing they can recoup their losses – while watching their opponents win hand after hand, thanks to the cards the GOP themselves keep dealing from the bottom of the deck.
