2. I really think that brain surgeon has some serious brain issues

I'm eternally curious as to why he walked away from medicine. As far as I know, he's not even consulting. Pediatric Neurosurgery isn't exactly an overstaffed specialty. If, for some reason, he is no longer capable of performing surgery, it is surprising that he didn't, at least, keep his skills useful by consulting or teaching.

My job was credentialing physicians. If I still had access to the pertinent information sources, it would be very interesting to look for clues.
