(60,851 posts)If he is still in the low 40s - with disaproval above 50 as the election nears, I think you may have many Congressional Republicans and the few Senators up for re-election trying to distance themselves. (Remember that in 2014, many Democrats did to a President in far better standing - and partly because some thought the Clintons could start to take the lead role better than the President.)
He may be at his most powerful now. His numbers with Republicans are said to be better than those of W or Reagan at a similar point. I would suggest that this is more a measure of "our team won" - "let's enact our dream list" ... before they realize that they do not all have the same dreams and the very non specificity of Trump's campaign means they do not have a DETAILED agenda they all agree on.
Some pundits have said this is why he is trying to ram through a healthcare bill -- which has had NO hearings in Congress yet. I remember the huge number of House and Senate hearings - most in public.
