Email to my repug rep re OBAMACARE [View all]

On edit: I live in AL District 1.
Bradley Byrne is my congressman.
He was a Democrat until 1997.

Dear Brad,

1. A significant MAJORITY of U.S. voters DO NOT WANT TO LOSE THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT, AKA OBAMACARE.
This is not conjecture.
This is not when a politician says “What the American people want is...” and we all know that we want no such thing.
This is according to reputable polls, not Breitbart.

What do you and your colleagues plan to do about the estimated 15 to 25 MILLION Americans who will no longer be able to afford healthcare insurance?

2. We are the ONLY so-called ‘developed’ nation that does not have national healthcare coverage for ALL of its citizens, from womb to tomb.
They get better lifetime (and longevity) results (due to preventive medicine) at a fraction of the cost that we pay.
You already know this, I’m sure. Your constituents do.
Why do we stick with this expensive, sub-standard system?
Why do we think we know better than other developed nations when they do healthcare better than we do?
Is this ‘American Exceptionalism’?
It just looks dumb to me.

3. Is the reason you and your colleagues say we can’t afford decent healthcare for all of our citizens because we MUST spend an OBSCENE amount of our budget on ‘defense’?
Oh come ON, Brad.
We spend more on defense than China, Russia, Saudi Arabia, France, the UK, India, and Germany...COMBINED.
Actually in 2014 (last available figures) we OUTSPENT them by 9 BILLION, 610 BILLION TO 601 BILLION.

Wow. What if from now on we just MATCHED them and we could spend that extra 9 BILLION on universal healthcare?
Boy, I bet THAT would make a lot of happy people.
Isn’t that a part of what government should do?
Make happy people?

4. You say this repeal/replace bill “ sends power over health care back to the states”.
Back to a state that is bankrupt?
Back to a state whose governor is about 2 jumps away from impeachment?
Back to a state whose speaker of the house is looking at some serious time in stir?
Back to a state whose chief justice just got fired FOR THE SECOND TIME?

Oh yeah. No sweat.
We can handle this.
Brad?
Really?

Look, I appreciate it that you were brave enough to hold a town hall meeting in Mobile a few days ago.
That took some cajones, even though your district is 90% Republican.
Those of us who showed up were mainly the OTHER 10%.
Yep, the dreaded Democrats.
The same Democrats who voted FOR you to keep Dean Young out.

Brad, we’ll keep voting for you as the lesser of two evils until a (possibly?) lesser evil shows up.
Maybe we should talk?
