(5,730 posts)I can't say that I would always do it. Neither would I say that it is always better to fight. I had to make immediate, instinctive judgment calls. Two of the times, I figured there was a good chance that the rapist would kill me afterwards anyway, so I fought. One of those times, the guy told me he was already wanted for murder in Colorado, so if I didn't comply or told anyone, he would come back and murder me. I did not doubt it.
I also have fought off several intrusions into my home as well as agressive people. Again, whether to fight or not requires a quick judgment call. There is not a categorical answer.
Just one story. I flew into Barcelona in graduate school. I was to reside with a Spanish family and attend the University. I took a cab from the airport, and I gave the driver my host family's address. He was chatty, and I was happy to be speaking Spanish. After a while, I noticed that we were getting on the edge of the city, and I finally located us on the map...this was before GPSs on our phones. I told him that he was going the wrong way. He argued, but he tried to remain friendly, at first. Then, it got heated. The speed increased a lot. He took me just out of the city to a relatively secluded place, parked, jumped into the back seat, doors were locked, and he started ripping my clothes off, and pulling his pants off. I bit him as hard as I could, a mouthful, into the fleshy area of his shoulder. I figured he would start beating me and we would fight, but maybe I could get to the front seat and get out. Anyway, he yelled like hell, and called me a bitch.
Then, he jumped back over the seat, bleeding heavily, holding his wound, while he was saying, "you don't want, okay."
He drove me to my home, about 30 minutes or so away. I never saw him again, but I avoided taxis. I was lucky.
