Don't forget that conservatives all run on the "states rights" platform.

They want the Federal government to back out of it, but they won't ever tell individual states what to do.
If you live in a state that has good programs for the public welfare (e.g. New York) then you're lucky.
If you don't, well too effin' bad.

Remember that all politics are local.

Fight for public welfare programs in your own community and you can't go wrong.
That's a good plan until 45 is a bad memory.
