(25,697 posts)what seems clear to me is this move by Putin is NOT utilitarian in nature the way regional interventions in Syria or Ukraine have been
i find it much more likely that Putin did not consider the Cold War to be over with the dissolution of the USSR, and sees the USA as an enemy even now. and think about it -- how much did we actually help out in Russia as the USSR fell apart? did we intervene to prevent various crime syndicates from taking power? did we step in to help their state retain its dignity in defeat? no, we just let it crash and burn, and from the ashes arose a new leader, a cold war veteran, a spy, a ruthless autocrat who intends to win WW3 without dropping a single bomb. messing with our elections to destabilize our democracy is, for him, simply an extension of warfare using familiar tactics. i don't get the feeling he thought his agent would necessarily win, but now that he has his agent in place at the helm of our nation, he's going to re-work our nation's policies and practices for greatest possible advantage in the context of a quiet war
in short, don't just look for Putin to act directly for material gains -- he's already one of the richest and most powerful people in the world -- as his real interests lie elsewhere, victory in a war most of us considered over long ago.
