(6,129 posts)Remember that the slavery issue divided both the North and the South. There were plenty of Northerners who didn't want to give people of African descent freedom or equality, and there were plenty of Southerners who did. Plenty of Southerners who fought on the side of the United States, instead of the Confederacy. The civil war is often characterized as North v. South. When in fact, it was a war between those who remained loyal to the United States, and those who chose to break away over the issue of slavery; regardless of where they were born.
Classic example, John Buford, born in Kentucky.
By the same token, most of the Dixie states contain from 30-49% Democratic voters, who don't buy into these stupid, bullshit culture wars. (Al Gore, Bill Clinton etc.) Let's not vilify them, along with those who do. That's exactly what Republicans are relying on.
