2. The more I think about it, the worse this position is

The Repubs would ideally love to keep the filibuster and claim bipartisan support for their nutcase nominations. Then when the Dems take over at some time in the future, they will use the filibuster against any democratic nomination and scream bloody murder about any attempts to do away with it.

Best to let them take all the blame. If they do away with the filibuster, it is on them, and Gorsuch's insane rulings will also be entirely on them.
