in Reagan's tenure mid 1981 through mid 1982, I think, because our deficit ballooned out of control and the government had no money because of the tax cuts, and markets panicked over that. Once Reagan signed a huge tax increase into effect in 2003, I think, to try to pay for the deficit spending, the markets were calmed and and the economy recovered well. In fact, until the Bush recession of 2007-09 was dubbed The Great Recession, the 81-82 recession was often called The Great Recession because it was so severe.
After the 81-82 Great Recession, the next actual recession was not until George HW Bush was in office in 90-91, which tanked his approval ratings and led to Bill Clinton winning in 1992. ("It's the economy, stupid"
